and this evening's word is. . .

INKLING

anyone. . .

(doesn't it look funny, in capital letters!) (the use of capital letters decreases the amount of visual information about the word that our brains get, see, so it's more difficult to read them. . .) (the words in capitals) (at least, that's what neurolinguistic students were being taught back in the middle 80s) (and one reason why I rarely capitalise words - I mean, we need all the help we can get to decipher what is going on around here, right. . .) (BACK TO THE PLOT!) (inkling, remember)

?

The Inklings were a literary society in Oxford. They met in a pub called The Bird and Bastard. JRRR Rolkein and CS Lewis were members.

you are a veritable mine of fascinating information. . .

but you didn't vote on my poll

*sniffs*

(ever read The Father Christmas Letters by Tolkein? one of the best books EVER)

I voted, so no sniffing, I have had all the guilt i can take today...
and an Inkling?
Sorry haven't a CLUE.

I have now voted. You may count me.
My favourite little Tolkien was Farmer Giles of Ham which fits neatly with starshine.
As for inklings, they're little beginnings of understanding. Much too little to be capitalised. A great big INKLING like that is almost a whole comprehension.

(I'm much impressed with the achievement of a back up plan. I usually find it's as much as I can cope with to invent one plan. And if there's more than one I get them mixed up in the middle anyway)

sorrow :-) I've added you to my links, hope this is OK. . .

mig I shall investigate Farmer Giles! (didn't need the back-up plan in the end, but it did provide a certain degree of short term confidence - kind of. . . not as much as I'd hoped actually, perhaps they are over-rated. . .)
